Activated Carbon

Charbon actif | Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a non-hazardous organic substance made from carbonaceous raw materials such as coal, wood and coconut shells. Its main function is based on the phenomenon of adsorption thanks to its porous structure and its large internal surface area, which can exceed 1000 m²/g.

The different forms of activated carbon:

  • Powder : pulverized with a size of less than 0.18 mm (US Mesh 80). This carbon is mainly used in liquid phase applications.
  • Grain: irregularly shaped particles in a range of sizes from 0.2 mm to 5 mm for liquid and gas phase applications.
  • Extruded: cylindrical shapes with diameters ranging from 0.8 mm to 5 mm, used for gas phase applications due to its low pressure drop, high mechanical strength and low dust content.

Main uses of activated carbon:

  • Air treatment: deodorization and removal of potentially dangerous or harmful substances from the air
  • Gas treatment: removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Drinking water treatment: purification of water for human consumption in domestic or municipal applications
  • Wastewater treatment: removal of potentially hazardous or harmful substances from industrial water
  • In the food industry: purification or decolorization of a wide variety of liquids
  • In the chemical industry: purification and catalysis for a wide range of industrial applications.
  • Other applications include dechlorination
